In recent weeks members of the T2S community have been very active in two major conferences on sustainability transformations.
|
First, the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI2021) brought together thousands of researchers for many virtual sessions and in-person events in Brisbane, Australia. Several members of the T2S community joined a session on Critical social science perspectives on transformations to sustainability – emerging framings and approaches. All congress registrants can watch the video now, and you can find out more in the blog posted by Akriti Jain (IPACST project) ahead of the session. We are currently working to make some clips available more widely, and these should be added to the T2S website in due course.

Navigating towards sustainability: how research networks can make a difference using the ‘network compass’
Addressing complex sustainability problems requires more than scientific knowledge. Researchers must collaborate with societal actors from government, business and civil society, and engage in the co-production of knowledge and action. Sustainability-oriented networks can help to foster this co-production as they link different types of actors across various scales. But how can such networks effectively facilitate co-production? The ‘network compass’ offers guidance in supporting networks to reflect on effective strategies for sustainability transformations.

Faced with devastating cyclones, how are women in coastal Bangladesh building resilience?
The TAPESTRY project focuses on how vulnerable and marginalized people in areas with a high risk of climate uncertainty are building their own agency, by working together on sustainable responses to uncertainties in ‘patches’ of transformation. This blog explores how people from Shyamnagar and Satkhira (especially women) are becoming more involved in adaptation practices.

Kachchh is a dryland in Western India with a dynamic ecosystem. The livestock-based economy has always been one of the most important sources of livelihood. In this arid to semi-arid region, pastoralism has been practiced for generations, providing an important source of food and income. However, in mainstream conservation and policy discourses, pastoralism is denigrated as backward and unproductive, and often blamed for the degradation of mangroves and their habitats.

The TAPESTRY project research is taking place in the midst of transformations, with camel rearing said to be being revived and demand for camel milk increasing.

This paper by Giuseppe Feola, Olga Koretskaya and Danika Moore explores sustainability transformations through the lens of processes of making and un-making, based on analysis of an ongoing sustainability transformation, the territorios campesinos agroalimentarios (TCA) movement in Colombia. It sets out the basis for a research agenda that is sensitive to the analysis of transformation as a multifaceted, multilevel process that entails the deconstruction of capitalist modernity and the construction of post-capitalist realities.
|
Some of the ideas in the paper were presented by Giuseppe Feola during the 2020 virtual meeting of the T2S programme and we hope you will enjoy reading it. Please contact us if you are unable to access the full paper at the link above and would like to receive a copy.
